Nigel Cabourn 9.5oz Basic T-Shirt

Nine and a half ounces is the number to pay attention to, because on a t-shirt the weight of the cloth determines almost everything else. A standard tee runs between four and six ounces per square yard. At nine and a half this is close to double that, and the differences are immediate and permanent: it hangs straight down from the shoulder instead of clinging, the neckline holds its shape instead of going wavy in the first month, the body does not go transparent, and it survives being washed constantly, which is the only test a t-shirt is ever actually put to. The small chest pocket is the only detail on it. One hundred percent cotton, made in Japan, in brown and in dark green.

Why we selected it

Cheap tees announce themselves within a month, usually at the neckline. A heavyweight cotton is the only reliable way we know to avoid that, and there is not much more to say about a plain t-shirt than that it should be a good one.

This is the plainest thing Cabourn’s work here includes, and it is made to the same specification as the rest of it.

One hundred percent cotton at nine and a half ounces. Small chest pocket. Made in Japan. Offered in Brown and in Dark Green.

Fit notes

Sizing runs 42 through 52 on the house’s shirt scale, and both colors run the full range. A heavy cotton jersey does not stretch to the body the way a light one does; it hangs. Expect it to shrink once in length on a first hot wash and then hold.

Styling

Under the Baseball Shirt LS or the Open Collar Shirt – Remiepoly Check, both of which are cut to be worn open over something. On its own with the Army Cargo Pant.

Care

Cool wash, gentle cycle, and dry flat or on a line rather than hot. A heavyweight jersey takes a long time in a hot dryer and shrinks in length while it is in there, which is the one way to spoil this shirt. Our care guidance covers cotton in more detail.
