Nigel Cabourn Open Collar Shirt – Remiepoly Check

A wide collar and a boxy body are two decisions that only work together. A wide collar on a fitted shirt looks like a mistake, because the collar is describing a broader shoulder than the body underneath it has. On a boxy cut the two agree, and the result is a shirt with a horizontal emphasis that sits away from the body rather than following it. The two large chest pockets reinforce that same horizontal, which is why they are large and why there are two of them rather than one. This is a shirt built to be worn open and untucked, and every proportion on it is chosen accordingly. It is one hundred percent cotton, and it is a check.

Why we selected it

The open, boxy, wide-collared shirt is a hard shape to find made properly, because most makers cut it from a fitted block and let it out. This one is drawn as what it is.

This is the most recent part of Cabourn’s work that we carry, and it is where the house is working in a lighter register than the outerwear.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton. Wide collar, boxy fit, two large chest pockets, in a check. We hold no country of origin and no color name for this shirt. That is unusual in this brand and we would rather say so than assume.

Fit notes

Boxy by pattern, so it will feel fuller and shorter than a shirt of the same nominal size and it is cut to be worn untucked. Sizing runs 48, 50, and 52 on the house’s shirt scale. A cotton at an unstated weight will shrink once on a hot wash and then stop, and it softens as it is washed rather than staying as it arrived, which on a shirt cut this loosely is most of the reason to own one.

Styling

Open over the 9.5oz Basic T-Shirt, which is what a boxy shirt is best at. With the Army Cargo Pant or the Officer’s Pant.

Care

Cool wash, gentle cycle, and dry flat or on a line rather than hot, since heat is what shrinks a cotton shirt and it only gets one chance. Press on the reverse. Our care guidance covers cotton in more detail.
