Foil denim is a finishing process, not a fabric. A metallic or resinous layer is applied to the face of the cloth after weaving, which sits on the surface rather than penetrating the yarn, and the result is a denim with a semi-shiny overlay that catches light along the leg and breaks up wherever the cloth folds. It is a technique the house has returned to repeatedly, and it produces the specific thing Owens denim does that ordinary denim does not: it reads as dark until it moves.
The cut underneath is disciplined. High waisted, slim through the thigh, and bootcut all the way to the floor, with six pockets and a concealed zip fly so nothing interrupts the front. Floor length on a bootcut is a specific decision. It means the trouser is drafted around a heel or a substantial boot and it will pool if worn flat, which is worth knowing before rather than after.
Three percent rubber in the composition is the unusual entry. In a stretch denim it gives the cloth a memory rather than simple give, which is what stops a slim high-waisted trouser sagging through a long evening.
Why we selected it
We took this from the Spring/Summer 2025 collection because it is the piece that photographs like evening wear and behaves like a jean. The overlay does all the work, so the customer buys one interesting trouser rather than an interesting outfit. It is also the pair we would put a first-time customer in over the more sculptural denim.
Materials and construction
Ninety percent cotton, seven percent polyester, and three percent rubber, in a lightweight foil denim with a semi-shiny overlay. Made in Italy, in Black. High waist, slim fit, floor-length bootcut, six pockets, concealed zip fly. From the Spring/Summer 2025 Hollywood collection.
Fit notes
Slim and high waisted, with real recovery from the rubber and polyester in the blend, so it holds the fit rather than growing. Floor length means the hem is drafted to sit over a heel or a substantial boot. If you intend to wear them flat, they will need shortening, and a foil finish should be hemmed by someone who understands it.
Styling
With a heel or a heavy boot. With a plain top, because the surface of the trouser is already doing something. This is the Owens denim that goes out in the evening.
Care
A surface finish is the most vulnerable part of any garment. Wash cool, inside out, and hang to dry, and keep these out of a hot dryer entirely, since heat and tumbling will lift a foil overlay faster than anything else. Our care guidance covers the general principles.
