Rick Owens Gonna – Edfu Skirt

Gonna means skirt, so the name of this product reads Skirt – Edfu Skirt. The repetition is in the name and not in the garment. What matters is the cloth: this is the Edfu in a cotton jersey, where the other version of it is a woven plaid, and the difference between them is total.

A jersey is a knit, so it stretches, drapes, and clings where a woven holds itself away from the body. Put the Edfu construction into it, with a side seam gathered up so the hem rises on one side and falls into a train on the other, and the ruching does something quite different: instead of standing in sculptural folds it collapses into soft gathers that follow the hip. The split opens more readily. The train drags rather than sweeps.

Cardinal red in a cotton jersey is a matte, saturated red without any sheen to it, and on a skirt with this much movement it reads as a single block of colour that changes shape as the wearer moves.

Why we selected it

The jersey version is the wearable one, and a knit and a woven are two different propositions even when the construction is the same. That is the honest reason. It is also the piece that makes the Edfu shape available to someone who wants the idea without an occasion to wear it to.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton, in a jersey. Made in Italy, in Cardinal Red. Ruched side seam opening to a split, hem tapering into a train.

Fit notes

Jersey stretches, so this fits over a range where the woven version does not. The ruche is fixed and the gathers will settle with wear. The trained hem means the back is considerably longer than the front and the skirt should be judged on the body.

Styling

With a flat shoe and a plain black top, so the colour and the movement are the only things happening. Tucked or untucked both work, though tucked shows the ruche, which is the design.

Care

Wash cool and dry flat. Do not press the ruched seam, since the gathering is the garment and an iron will flatten it out. A saturated red will lose colour to heat, so keep it out of a hot dryer. Our care guidance covers the general principles.
