Rick Owens Tank Dress

Two details separate this from any other black tank dress. The first is the seam running down the centre back, which is a construction step that no tank dress requires and which gives the garment a vertical axis following the wearer’s spine. The second is the racerback, cut only slightly, so the straps narrow toward the shoulder blades without the dress becoming athletic.

The cloth is a viscose-silk, lighter on the silk than the house’s other tanks, which gives it a matte surface and a slightly firmer hand. The hem is raw-cut, left unfinished as it came off the cutting table, which is a position this house has held for thirty years and not a shortcut.

Why we selected it

It is an easy way into the house that is still unmistakably from it, and it is worn constantly. That is the whole reason, and we would rather say it plainly than build an argument around a black tank dress.

Materials and construction

Eighty-five percent viscose and fifteen percent silk. Made in Italy, in Black. Round neck, thin straps, slight racerback, raw-cut hem, centre seam down the back. From Spring/Summer 2025.

Fit notes

Close-fitting with a little give from the viscose, and cut to skim rather than cling. Take your usual size. The raw hem is the finish and the length should not be altered.

Styling and care

Under a knit or a jacket, or on its own with a boot. Hand wash cool, dry flat, and reshape while damp; do not hang it wet. Our care guidance covers the general principles.
