Rick Owens Turtle Coat

Down is the most efficient insulation there is and the hardest to make look like clothing. The problem is structural: down only works when it has room to loft, loft requires baffles, and baffles are what make almost every down garment read as equipment. The design question is therefore not warmth but silhouette, and it is answered by how much the coat is willing to give up.

This one keeps a regular fit rather than a puffed one, closes with a plain front zip, and puts a high collar where a hood would otherwise go. The cuffs are ribbed, so the sleeve seals without a tab or a tightener. The pockets snap rather than zip. And there is a strap detail across the back, which is the one line on the garment that is there for the drawing rather than the function.

Then there is the colour. Pale blue on a down coat is a decision, and it is the reason to own this rather than the black one you already have. It is a soft, cold, slightly grey blue that behaves like a neutral in daylight and does not read as sportswear.

Why we selected it

Every customer we have owns a black puffer and most of them dislike it. We took this because it is the warm coat you would actually choose to put on: the fit is regular rather than inflated, the details are resolved instead of technical, and the colour makes it the only thing in the outfit that has to be interesting. It is also the coat that gets worn every day in January, which is not nothing.

The house’s outerwear is mostly leather and mostly black, and this is the practical, coloured exception to both.

Materials and construction

Shell one hundred percent polyamide, with down filling. Made in Italy. Colour: Pale Blue. High collar, front zip closure, snap-button side pockets, ribbed cuffs, and a strap detail at the back.

Fit notes

Regular fit, which for a down garment means it is cut to be worn over a knit rather than over a suit. The high collar sits close, so it is a coat that will feel warmer than its weight the moment you zip it. Ribbed cuffs seal at the wrist and will accommodate a shirt sleeve underneath but not a bulky one. Down compresses where you press it and recovers when it is hung, so a coat that looks flat across the back after a car journey is behaving correctly.

Styling

Over a fine knit and a straight trouser. Because the colour is doing the work, everything else can be black or grey and should be. A low shoe or a boot; this is not a technical coat and does not want technical footwear.

Care

Down wants storing loose rather than compressed, so hang it with room around it and do not leave it crushed in a bag between seasons, because that is what permanently kills loft. A coated shell and a down fill are a combination that a general dry cleaner can ruin, so use a specialist who launders down. Our care guidance covers the rest.
