An open knit is a cloth with holes designed into it. The stitch is worked loose and large so that the structure itself is the pattern, which means there is no print, no jacquard, and nothing applied: what you are looking at is the path of the yarn and the air between it. That makes the sweater unusually dependent on what goes under it, because the color beneath comes through the openings and becomes part of the garment. An open knit has more give than a closed one, because there is less yarn holding each course in place, so it drapes rather than holds and it will lengthen if it is hung while wet.
