Studio Nicholson Sonny Pant

A near-even cotton and linen blend behaves like neither fiber on its own, and this one is close enough to half and half that both are visibly at work. The linen brings dryness, coolness, and the slight irregularity in the yarn that stops a plain dark cloth reading as flat. The cotton brings the softness and the recovery that linen has never had, so the trouser relaxes across a day without going shapeless at the knee and comes back when it is washed. Black Grape is the color, which is a black with something underneath it rather than a true black, and it shows in daylight and disappears at night.

The build is deliberately plain. A drawstring waist and no fly hardware, pockets in the side seams, and two buttoned pockets at the back. Wide through the leg, and cut as a unisex trouser.

Why we selected it

A drawstring trouser is easy to make badly, because the waistband is the only structure in the whole garment and everything else has to come from the cloth. This is the one where the cloth is up to it.

Fifty-four percent cotton and forty-six percent linen. Drawstring waist, wide leg, side seam pockets, and two buttoned back pockets. Cut as a unisex trouser. Color: Black Grape.

Fit notes

The drawstring means the waist is yours to set, so this is a trouser to size for the hip and the leg rather than for the waistband. It is sized Small and X-Small rather than in the UK numbers the rest of this house’s womenswear uses, so treat it as its own size run and not as a translation of one. Call us if you want help placing it. Linen in this proportion softens noticeably over the first few washes and keeps going after that.

Styling

With the Votan top, untucked. Under the Dash jacket. It is the plainer of the two wide trousers here and the one that will take a T-shirt and a sandal without looking underdressed, which the Minos does not quite do.

Care

Wash cool and dry away from heat. It is the linen in the blend that decides how this trouser behaves under an iron and not the cotton, even though there is slightly more cotton in it, so treat it as a linen trouser, and expect it to crease. Our general care guidance covers linen.
