Swampgod Double Layer Denim

The name states the construction, and the construction is the interesting part. A trouser cut in two layers behaves differently from a trouser cut in one: it hangs with more weight, it holds a line further down the leg, and it wears in unevenly, because the outer layer takes the abrasion while the inner one stays newer for longer. That is a slower and less predictable kind of aging than a single-layer trouser gives you, and on a garment built by a house that works from salvaged cloth it is arguably the point. Three colors are made: black, indigo, and ivory. We hold no written description of this piece and no country of origin for it, and we would rather say so than guess. What we do hold is the cloth on the record, a cotton canvas, and the construction the name states.

Why we selected it

We wanted the plainest way into this house, and a trouser is it. The double layer is a construction decision rather than a graphic one, which is the version of Swampgod that a person will actually reach for.

Swampgod rebuilds archetypal workwear out of what an industry has already finished with, and a double-layer trouser is what that method looks like when it is being least demonstrative.

Materials and construction

The record gives the material as a cotton canvas and the construction as double-layered. The product’s own name says denim and its material attribute says cotton canvas, and those are two different cloths. We have not chosen between them and we would rather tell you that than pick one. Colors: black, indigo, and ivory. We do not hold a country of origin for this piece.

Fit notes

A double-layer cotton trouser carries real weight, so it hangs straight and does not follow the leg the way a single-layer cloth does. Cotton canvas softens substantially with wearing and washing and starts firm. Because this house builds one piece at a time, fit and appearance vary from piece to piece more than they would in a production garment. Please ask us, or come and try the one we have.

Styling

With the Hand Knit Basic Sweater, which is the other plainest thing this house makes. With the Vest Jacket over it. The ivory is the version that does something a black trouser cannot.

Care

Wash cool, inside out, and infrequently, which is right for a heavy cotton in any of its forms and right for an indigo in particular, since indigo gives up color to water for a long time. Dry away from direct heat. Our care guidance covers the rest.
