A cutout is an aperture, and on a denim trouser it is the least reversible decision a maker can take. You cannot put cloth back. That is worth saying plainly because it explains why cutouts are rare on a garment that is otherwise built to survive decades: the whole logic of denim is accumulation, and a cutout is a subtraction made at the start. On a garment built out of salvaged and reclaimed material the subtraction reads differently, as one more piece of visible history in a garment that already has several. The record gives the material as denim and the colors as indigo and black. We hold no written description and no country of origin for this piece.

Why we selected it

Denim is where this house started and where its argument is easiest to see, because everyone already knows what an ordinary pair looks like. This is the pair that makes the point without explaining itself.

Swampgod’s construction is left legible rather than hidden, and an aperture is the most literal version of that available to a maker.

Materials and construction

Denim, with cutouts. Colors: indigo and black. We hold no written description, no fiber percentage, and no country of origin for this piece. We do not describe the cutouts’ placement, because nothing on the record does and a photograph is not a specification.

Fit notes

We hold no fit description and no measurements. The sizes are 30, 32, and 34. Denim of any weight softens and molds with wearing. Because this house builds one piece at a time, appearance and placement vary from piece to piece more than they would in a production garment, which on a garment with cutouts in it is not a small caveat. Please ask us.

Styling

With the Hand Knit Basic Sweater, which is the plainest counterweight this house makes. Under the Vest Jacket. With the Triangle Bag.

Care

Wash cool, inside out, and as rarely as you can stand, which is right for any indigo denim: indigo sits on the surface of the yarn rather than through it and gives up color to water for a long time. We cannot tell you whether this denim is raw, so we are not going to tell you how to break it in. Our care guidance covers the rest.
