A cutout is an aperture, and on a denim trouser it is the least reversible decision a maker can take. You cannot put cloth back. That is worth saying plainly because it explains why cutouts are rare on a garment that is otherwise built to survive decades: the whole logic of denim is accumulation, and a cutout is a subtraction made at the start. On a garment built out of salvaged and reclaimed material the subtraction reads differently, as one more piece of visible history in a garment that already has several. Wash cool, inside out, and as rarely as you can stand, which is right for any indigo denim: indigo sits on the surface of the yarn rather than through it and gives up color to water for a long time.
