Gabardine is a steep, tightly woven twill, and it has been the cloth of trench coats and serious trousers for a century because a tight twill holds a line and resists abrasion in a way a loose weave cannot. Tibi’s bio twill starts there and then does two things to it. The surface is sanded, which breaks the sheen a gabardine normally carries and leaves a dry, matte face without softening the structure underneath, and a water-repellent finish goes on after that. What comes out is a mid-weight cotton with no stretch in it whatsoever that behaves like a suiting rather than like a casual twill.

Which is exactly what the triple pleat needs. Three pleats at each side of the front is a great deal of gathered volume to hold open, and in a soft cotton it collapses into bunching within an hour. Here the cloth stands, so the pleats stay pleats, the volume reads as architecture, and the line falls clean from a high waist through a wide leg. The crop is the last decision and the one that makes the garment work: it stops above the ankle, so the whole shape resolves rather than pooling, and it leaves the shoe visible, which a wide trouser needs if it is not going to swallow the outfit.

Why we selected it

Most wide cropped trousers are cut in something soft, and they look correct in the morning and shapeless by lunch. This one does not, and the cloth is the entire reason. It is also the trouser in this house that does the most with the least: a flat shoe and any plain top, and it is a finished outfit without a single further decision.

Tibi was founded in 1997 by Amy Smilovic, and the bio twill is one of the house’s own developed cloths rather than a stock suiting.

The colour

Dark navy does something different with the sanding than black does. A sanded surface scatters light rather than returning it, and on a navy that scattering warms the colour instead of flattening it, so the trouser reads as a deep, slightly dusty blue rather than as a near-black seen in poor light. It sits against black, against brown, and against cream without matching any of them or fighting any of them, which is the useful property of a navy and the reason to take this one if the wardrobe it is going into is already mostly black.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton, in the house’s bio twill, a sanded Italian gabardine with a water-repellent finish. Made in China. Dark Navy. High rise with triple pleats at the front, a wide leg, a cropped length, and an adjustable strap at the back.

Fit notes

Sits high at the natural waist with the pleats releasing volume through the top block, then falls wide and straight to a cropped hem. There is no stretch in the cloth at all, so the waist is the fit decision and there is nothing to negotiate afterwards; the adjustable back strap is what takes up the last of it. The crop is drawn to sit above the ankle, so the length is a fixed part of the design rather than something to alter.

Styling

With the Sheer Wool Gauze Oversized Shirt open over a tank, oatmeal against navy, which is the pairing the colour was made for. With the Washable Cashmere Easy Men’s Hoodie, which is also navy, for one register carried twice in two entirely different weights. Under the Cavalier Twill Shrunken Blazer, cropped over cropped, which is a single idea stated twice and works better than it should.

Care

A water-repellent finish is a treatment on the cloth rather than a property of it, and heat and harsh processes are what take it off. Wash cool or clean gently, never hot, and hang to dry. Pressing the pleats is the one thing worth doing carefully, because a triple pleat set flat in the wrong place is difficult to undo. Our care guidance covers cotton.
