Paychi Guh at W Department

Paychi Karen Guh founded her namesake line in 2013 and has made essentially one thing since: cashmere knitwear, worked with the discipline of someone whose reference points are architecture and modern art rather than the season. Form first, then texture, then a very small amount of graphic incident. Nothing else.

The distinctions that matter here are grades of fiber, not silhouettes. Premium cashmere is the house’s Inner Mongolian yarn, spun to different weights so that one fiber makes both a light crew and a substantial cardigan. Worsted cashmere can only be spun from the longest and finest fibers in the fleece, which is what makes a worsted crew so light and so unexpectedly cool against the skin. Baby cashmere is the first clip from a young goat, and there is very little of it. We wrote about the sourcing and the grades at more length in The World of Paychi Guh.

W Department stocks Paychi Guh in women’s. The Worsted Cashmere L/S Crew comes in black, navy, and pine green, made in Inner Mongolia. Alongside it are the Premium Cashmere Collar Cardigan in black, the Premium Cashmere Relaxed Turtleneck in natural, and a Baby Cashmere Crew in heather oat. The Scrunch Neck Pullover, in charcoal and caribou, is made in Mongolia in 100 percent Mongolian cashmere. The LS Relaxed Crew is black. The one piece that breaks the pattern is the Dreamy Cashmere Furry Vest, 60 percent mercerized wool, 26 percent cashmere, 14 percent nylon, which gives it more depth and more sheen than cashmere alone.

Santa Fe is high desert, which means the temperature drops forty degrees after dinner most of the year. A worsted crew that folds into nothing and carries you from four in the afternoon to ten at night is not a luxury here. It is infrastructure.
