Everything else in this collection is one hundred percent one thing, and this vest is deliberately not. Sixty percent mercerized wool, 26 percent cashmere, and 14 percent nylon is a blend built for a surface rather than for a hand: the wool supplies the body and the sheen, the cashmere supplies the softness where the garment touches you, and the nylon at 14 percent is the structural thread that lets a raised, hairy pile stay attached to the fabric instead of shedding out of it. That last part is what separates a furry knit that survives a season from one that does not. A vest is the right garment for a fabric like this. It has no sleeves to rub against a coat, which is where a pile knit wears first, and it is the layer that is easiest to add and remove in a climate that changes forty degrees between lunch and dinner. Black, and made in Inner Mongolia, China.
Why we selected it
Every collection of plain knitwear needs one thing with a surface on it, or the whole rail reads flat. This is the piece that does that here, and it does it without a pattern or a graphic.
Paychi Guh allows itself a very small amount of graphic incident and this vest is where the house spends it, in texture rather than in color.
Materials and construction
Sixty percent mercerized wool, 26 percent cashmere, and 14 percent nylon, knitted with a raised surface. Vest construction. Color: Black. Made in Inner Mongolia, China.
Fit notes
We do not hold measurements. A pile knit reads bulkier than its weight, so it will look like more layer than it feels like. Sleeveless, so it goes over a fine crew without the double-sleeve problem, and the Worsted Cashmere L/S Crew is exactly the thing it is cut to go over. Nylon in the blend means it holds its shape rather than growing.
Styling
Over the Worsted Cashmere L/S Crew in any of its colors, which is the pairing where the smooth surface against the raised one does all the work. Over the Baby Cashmere Crew in Heather Oat. Over a shirt, where the collar and cuffs are the only other thing happening.
Care
The cashmere governs this vest even at 26 percent, so treat it as a cashmere garment rather than a wool one: hand wash cool, press between towels, dry flat, and fold rather than hang. Do not press a raised knit at all. Heat flattens the pile and the pile is what you bought. Our care guidance covers the rest.
