A hooded sweatshirt is the most democratic garment of the last fifty years, and the reason it survives every attempt to make it formal is that the hood is functional. It exists to be pulled up. Trim it in ostrich and it cannot be: feathers crush, they do not recover from a rain, and they are the one material that punishes exactly the use the garment was designed around. So the hood stops being a hood and becomes a collar, which is what this piece is actually about. Ostrich is the right feather for it. It is the plume with no interlocking barbules, which is why it has no vane, no defined edge, and no direction to it: it moves as a mass rather than as a shape, so against a flat knit it reads as a disturbance in the surface rather than as something applied to it. The knit underneath is cashmere at mid weight, which is the gauge where cashmere holds a relaxed cut without going slack in it. Black throughout, so the feather is a change in texture and not a change in color. Made in Italy.
