Comme des Garçons Homme Fleece Jacket

The word fleece has come to mean polyester, and that is a fairly recent theft of a word that used to mean a sheep. This one is sixty-eight percent wool and thirty-two percent cotton, which puts it back where it started. The practical difference is not subtle. A wool pile holds warmth when it is damp, where a polyester pile stops working the moment it wets through, and it does not build the static charge that makes a synthetic fleece cling to everything it is worn under. The cotton at just under a third is what makes it wearable next to a shirt: it takes the prickle out of the hand and gives the pile something stable to sit on. Chunky is an accurate word for it. Why we selected it

A wool fleece is a rare thing and we bring one in when we find it, because it does the job a polyester fleece does and then keeps doing it in weather that shuts a polyester fleece down.

This is Comme des Garçons Homme in its most utilitarian register, which is a register the line works in more often than it is given credit for.

Fit notes

A deep pile adds visible bulk at the shoulder and the chest whatever the measurements say, so this layers over a shirt comfortably and under a tailored jacket badly. Wool pile compresses where a strap or a bag sits and lifts again when it is hung and left alone.

Styling

Over the Homme LS Button-Up or the Homme Gingham Shirt. With the Homme Fatigue Trousers. Under the Homme Bomber Jacket when it is genuinely cold, which is the only combination in the line that reads as a system.

Care

Wool at more than two-thirds governs, so keep it out of a machine and out of heat, and let it dry flat rather than hanging wet, because a wet pile is heavy enough to pull its own shoulder down.
