Comme des Garçons Homme Bomber Jacket

The bomber is the most borrowed shape in menswear and almost all of them are made in nylon, because nylon is what the original was and because a light shell is what the shape was engineered around. This one is fifty-two percent wool, thirty-one percent polyester, and seventeen percent rayon, which is a blend built to do three separate jobs in a heavy cloth. The wool gives it warmth and body and a matte surface that reads as a coat rather than as sportswear. The polyester is doing the structural work, holding the shape through the shoulder and the hem where a pure wool of this weight would eventually give. The rayon is the least obvious and the most interesting: at seventeen percent it softens the hand and adds enough fall that a heavyweight jacket still drapes at the sleeve instead of standing off the arm. Then there is the color, which is the part of this jacket that is actually about Comme des Garçons. It is black outside, and orange at the collar and through the lining, so the only person who sees the color decision is the person wearing it. Made in Japan.

Why we selected it

We wanted one bomber that was not a shell. This is a wool garment cut in a sportswear shape rather than a sportswear garment made slightly nicer, and the difference shows the first time you wear it in real cold.

Comme des Garçons Homme is the line that takes an ordinary garment and moves one thing, and on this jacket the thing that moved is the inside.

Fit notes

A heavyweight cloth in a short jacket sits away from the body rather than following it, so this reads fuller than its size would suggest and it wants the room. It takes a hoodie or a heavy shirt underneath without the shoulder binding. The sleeve pocket sits where a sleeve pocket sits and it will carry a phone, which changes how the sleeve hangs when it is loaded.

Styling

Over the Homme Jersey Hoodie for the version that leans sportswear, or over the Homme Gingham Shirt for the version that does not. With the Homme Fatigue Trousers or the Homme Nylon Trousers. The orange is not a thing to match to; it is a thing to leave alone.

Care

Wool at just over half decides how this jacket is cleaned, so treat it as a wool coat: brush it, rest it between wearings, and have it cleaned rather than washed. The rayon in the blend points the same way, and neither fiber recovers from a machine. Our care guidance covers the rest.
