Mulberry silk is reeled from the cocoons of silkworms fed only on mulberry leaves, which produces a long, uniform filament rather than the short broken fibers of wild silk. Knitted rather than woven, and blended with cotton at fifty-five to forty-five, it makes a close-fitting top possible without elastane. The knit structure supplies the stretch, the cotton supplies the recovery that brings the shape back, and the silk supplies a surface that does not read as a t-shirt. That combination is the whole reason to own it: a fitted top that survives being fitted. Pure navy, and cut close through the shoulder rather than through the waist, which is where a close top usually goes wrong.

Why we selected it

The fitted top is the piece that gets worn most and replaced most, because almost all of them stretch out at the elbow and stay there. This one has enough cotton in it to come back.

Cortana knits this silk-and-cotton blend in more than one shape, and this is the closest-fitting of them.

Fit notes

Close-fitting by design, so it is meant to sit against the body rather than skim it. The knit will give across a day and recover with washing. It layers under the Nora Cardigan without adding bulk, which is what a knitted top does and a woven shirt does not.

Styling

With the Mel Pants for navy on navy, where the difference between a knit and a weave is what stops it going flat. With the Costa Pants or the Tunez Pants. Under the Nora Cardigan. Tucked, since the hem is not doing anything interesting.

Care

Silk at fifty-five percent governs, so wash by hand in cool water if you wash it at all, press between towels, and dry flat. A silk-cotton knit will lengthen if you hang it wet. Our care guidance covers the rest.
