Cortana Theresa Shirt

Forty-nine percent linen, thirty-six percent viscose, fourteen percent silk, and one percent virgin wool. Four fibers in one cloth is unusual, expensive to spin, and almost never done for the sake of it, so it is worth saying what it buys. Each fiber takes dye differently, and in a striped cloth that difference is the entire effect: the stripe is not one flat tone against another but a set of tones that shift as the light and the angle change, because the linen, the viscose, and the silk are each holding the same color at a slightly different depth. The rest is behavior. Linen at just under half gives the shirt dryness and body. Viscose at a third gives it the fall that linen cannot. Silk at fourteen percent takes the papery edge off the hand. The one percent of virgin wool is too little to warm anything and is almost certainly there for the spin, giving the yarn enough crimp to hold four dissimilar fibers together. Button front, unlined, and nothing else, because a cloth doing this much does not need a shirt doing anything.

Why we selected it

A striped shirt is the most replaceable garment there is, and this is the first one we have seen where the stripe is a consequence of the spinning rather than a decision made at the printer. That is worth the difference.

Cortana would rather solve a problem in the weave than in the seam, and a four-fiber stripe under a plain button front is the shortest demonstration of that anywhere in the collection.

Fit notes

Unlined, so the cloth sits directly against the body and you feel the linen in it. The viscose means the shirt falls from the shoulder rather than standing away from it, which is what makes it work untucked as well as tucked. Linen at just under half will crease at the elbow and across the back, and it settles rather than sets.

Styling

Untucked over the Costa Pants or the Mel Pants. Tucked into the Tunez Pants for the version that is doing the most. Under the Nora Cardigan when the shirt alone is not enough.

Care

The viscose governs this shirt, not the linen, even though there is more linen in it. Viscose loses strength when wet and shrinks in a way that does not come back, so hand wash cool and briefly or have it cleaned, and dry flat rather than in a machine. Press on the reverse while damp.
