Cortana Mel Pants

Fifty-two percent linen and forty-eight percent silk is an unusually balanced blend, and balance is the point of it. Linen alone gives a trouser a crease that holds and a leg that stands away from the body, which is what you want in a tailored shape and not what you want by four in the afternoon. Silk at nearly half brings the weight down and lets the leg move. The cut is tailored and tapered with a single pleat at the front, which is the pleat count that adds room at the hip without adding volume at the knee. The navy is pure rather than blued or blackened, so it reads as a decision rather than as a substitute for black.

Why we selected it

The tailored summer trouser is the hardest thing to buy, because the cloths that hold a line are the cloths that get hot. This one solves that with fiber rather than with a lighter weave.

This is Cortana tailoring at its most conventional in shape and least conventional in cloth, which is a fair description of how the house works generally.

Fit notes

Tapered through the leg and cut close through the seat, so the single pleat is providing all of the ease there is. The silk content means the trouser recovers rather than bagging at the knee across a day. Linen in the blend will still crease at the hip and behind the knee; that is the fiber and not the making.

Styling

With the Anele Top for a navy-on-navy version that works because the two cloths are different, one knitted and one woven. With the Theresa Shirt, untucked, when the stripe is doing the work. With the Nora Cardigan over either.

Care

Silk at forty-eight percent decides how these are cleaned, so treat them as a silk trouser and keep them out of a machine. Press on the reverse to keep the pleat and the taper. Our care guidance covers the rest.
