Corduroy is one of the few woven fabrics with a third dimension. It is made by weaving extra weft floats into the ground and then slitting them open and brushing them up, so the ridges, called wales, are standing tufts of cut fibre rather than anything printed or embossed. That is why corduroy catches light along the length of the wale and goes dark across it, and why a corduroy trouser changes colour as the leg moves. It is also why it is warm: standing pile traps air the way a napped cloth does, which is what made cord a winter trouser long before anyone thought about it as a look.
Cut on the Andover, which is the model this house uses for its tailored work, olive corduroy makes a trouser that is dressed without being formal. That is a narrow and useful register and there is not much in it.
Why we selected it
A cord trouser in a real colour rather than a beige one, cut on a tailored block rather than a workwear one. Both halves are less common than they should be.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent cotton corduroy, made in the USA. Colour: Olive.
Fit notes
Cotton corduroy has some give and relaxes at the knee across a day of wearing, then comes back in the wash. The pile makes the cloth read slightly fuller on the leg than a flat cotton of the same weight.
Styling
With the Bedford Jacket in black moleskin and a plain crewneck. With the Work Shirt in natural and nothing over it. Olive cord against natural cotton is the pairing that does the most work.
Care
Wash cool and inside out, and brush the pile in one direction when it dries. Keep it out of a hot dryer, which crushes a pile and does not give it back. Our cotton care guidance covers the rest.
