An elastic waistband on a corduroy trouser is a more interesting decision than it sounds. Corduroy is a woven pile, extra weft floats slit open and brushed up after weaving, and it is normally treated as a structured cloth: it goes on tailored trousers, it takes a crease, it holds a line. Putting it on an elasticated waist takes all of the formality out and leaves the material qualities behind, which are warmth, depth of colour, and a surface that changes as the light moves along the wale. Cropped slightly, so it finishes above the ankle rather than at it, the trouser reads deliberately short rather than accidentally so.
Why we selected it
Comfort and a good cloth are usually a trade, and this is one of the few trousers where they are not.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent cotton corduroy, made in the USA. Elastic waist, slightly cropped. Colour: Navy.
Fit notes
The elastic waist means it takes a range rather than a point, which makes the size choice about the hip and the leg rather than the waist. Cotton corduroy has some give and relaxes at the knee over a day, then recovers in the wash. Cropped, so it finishes above the ankle.
Styling
With the Square Neck Shirt. Under the Cutaway Jacket Crochet, where the pile and the openwork are doing opposite things. With a plain knit and nothing else.
Care
Wash cool and inside out, and brush the pile in one direction as it dries. Keep it out of a hot dryer, which crushes a pile permanently. Our cotton care guidance covers the rest.
Related pieces
The Andover Pant in olive corduroy and the FA Pant in olive corduroy are the same cord at full length. The Square Neck Shirt is the shirt above a cropped trouser, and the Cutaway Jacket Crochet the layer over it. There is more on the house on the Engineered Garments designer page.
