Engineered Garments FA Pant

The drawstring at the cuff is the detail to understand first. It comes straight off military fatigue trousers, where the point was to close the leg against insects, cold, and anything else that travels upward, and where a soldier could either blouse the trouser into a boot or let it hang. Kept on a civilian trouser it does something else: it turns one garment into two silhouettes. Pulled tight, the leg gathers at the ankle and the whole trouser balloons above it. Left loose, it falls straight and reads as an ordinary wide cargo. Almost no detail on a trouser gives you that much for so little.

Putting the whole apparatus in corduroy is the move. Corduroy is a woven pile, extra weft floats slit open and brushed up after weaving, which is why it has depth and warmth and why it belongs to winter and to the study rather than to the field. A fatigue trouser is a summer garment made of flat cotton. This is the same pattern executed in the wrong cloth on purpose, which is the method this house has run on since 1999.

Why we selected it

Cargo trousers are almost always bad and this one is not, because the pockets are where a fatigue pattern puts them rather than where a designer thinks they look interesting. The corduroy is why it works in October.

Taking a garment with a specific job and cutting it in the wrong cloth is the Engineered Garments method, stated plainly.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton corduroy, made in the USA. Multiple pockets with a drawstring at the cuff. Colour: Olive.

Fit notes

Wide through the leg, as a fatigue pattern is, with the drawstring giving you the choice at the ankle. Cotton corduroy has some give and relaxes at the knee across a day, then recovers in the wash. Loaded pockets on a wide trouser pull the line, so what you carry changes how it hangs.

Styling

With the Shooting Jacket in brown duck over a heavy crewneck. With the Work Shirt in natural, cuffs loose. Cuffs drawn in over a boot is the version that reads closest to where the trouser came from.

Care

Wash cool and inside out, and brush the pile in one direction as it dries. Keep it out of a hot dryer, which crushes the pile permanently. Our cotton care guidance covers the rest.
