Engineered Garments FW24 FA Pant

The fatigue trouser is one of the few garments in general circulation that was designed by a committee and came out right. Everything about the pattern is a consequence of a requirement: the pockets sit on the front and the thigh because a man wearing a pack cannot reach a back pocket, they are patch pockets because a patch pocket can be repaired in the field and a set-in one cannot, and the leg is cut wide because it has to move over a boot and under a load. Nobody was trying to make it look like anything. It looks the way it does because each decision had an argument behind it, and that is why it has survived seventy years of civilian reinterpretation without ever going away.

What this house does with it is leave the engineering alone and change everything else, which on this one means black. A fatigue trouser in olive drab is a costume. A fatigue trouser in black is a trouser.

Why we selected it

The pockets are in the right places, which sounds trivial and is the entire difference between a cargo trouser you wear and one you look at. Black is what makes it wearable outside a weekend.

Reinterpreting a specific issued garment rather than a generic idea of one is what Engineered Garments does, and the fatigue pant is the clearest case in the line.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton, made in the USA. Multiple pockets across the front. Colour: Black.

Fit notes

Cut wide through the leg, as a fatigue pattern is. Front pockets carry weight forward, so what you put in them changes how the trouser hangs. Cotton has some give and will relax at the knee across a day and recover in the wash.

Styling

With the Raglan Hoodie in graphite. With the Bedford Jacket in black moleskin, which is the version that holds together as one idea. With the Work Shirt in natural, for the contrast.

Care

Wash cool and hang to dry. Black cotton loses depth under heat and under sun more than any other colour, so keep it out of a hot dryer and off a line in full light. Our cotton care guidance covers the rest.
