Engineered Garments Olive Cotton Reverse Sateen Fatigue Pant

The straight-leg fatigue trouser is a pattern that has outlived every fashion that ever borrowed it, and the reason is that nothing in it is decorative. The leg is straight and full because it has to move. The pockets are patch pockets because a patch pocket can be repaired with a needle and a set-in one cannot. The waist is cut to sit and stay without help. There is no version of this trouser that is trying to flatter anybody, which is exactly why it has flattered several generations by accident.

The cloth is a reverse sateen, and the name describes an inversion. A sateen is woven so that long floats of yarn lie across one face, which is what gives any satin-weave cloth its smoothness and its faint sheen. Turn the fabric over, use the other side as the outside, and you have a cotton that is matte, dry, and unreflective where it shows and smooth where it touches. That is exactly why armies specified it: a uniform should not catch light, and a trouser worn for sixteen hours should be easy against the skin. It is a dense weave as well, so it wears hard, holds a colour deeply, and softens without going thin.

In olive it is the colour the pattern was issued in, and olive is also the colour this house returns to more than any other. Cut straight rather than wide or tapered, this is the plainest reading of the garment available: the pattern, the colour, the cloth, and nothing else.

Why we selected it

The plain straight-leg olive fatigue is the trouser that everything else in a wardrobe can be built around, and it is worth having a properly made one rather than a surplus one. Reverse sateen is the cloth that made the original worth wearing.

One hundred percent cotton in a reverse sateen, made in the USA. Straight leg. Colour: Olive.

Fit notes

Straight through the leg, falling from the knee without narrowing or widening. The sateen face runs on the inside, so the trouser passes over a base layer instead of gripping it, which is more noticeable than it sounds on a full leg. Cotton relaxes at the knee over a day of wearing and recovers in the wash.

Styling

With the Bedford Jacket in red duck canvas. With the Work Shirt in natural, or the Polo Shirt in white, and nothing over either. Olive against natural cotton is the pairing this house uses most.

Care

Wash cool and hang to dry. Olive is a compound dye and shifts under strong sun faster than a simple one, so dry it out of direct light. Our cotton care guidance covers the rest.
