Honeycomb is a knit structure rather than a pattern printed or woven onto one. The stitch is built so that the surface rises and falls in a regular cellular grid, which does three things at once: it traps air, so the cloth insulates better than its weight suggests; it gives the fabric thickness and body without adding a dense layer, so it stands up on its own; and it makes a plain color interesting by giving light somewhere to catch. In cotton rather than wool, the structure reads drier and cooler, and the jacket stops being a winter garment. A boyfriend cut is deliberately unfitted through the body, borrowed proportions worn as volume, which is the right shape for a knitted jacket because a knit that is fitted has to stretch and a knit that is stretched loses its structure. The stand-up collar closes with its own button, so the jacket goes from open blazer to closed neck without a scarf. Unlined throughout, so what you see inside is the honeycomb from the other side.
Why we selected it
A knitted jacket that holds a tailored shape is a hard thing to make and this one does it with structure rather than with interfacing. Cotton is what makes it wearable for most of the year rather than for three months of it.
The stand-up collar with its own closing button recurs across Harris Wharf London‘s tailoring; this is the version cut in a knit rather than a woven cloth.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent cotton, knitted as a honeycomb, in a Loro Piana cloth, made in Italy with Italian fabric. Unlined. Boxy, boyfriend-cut body with fitted long sleeves, a two-button front, and an additional button at the stand-up collar. Color: Navy Blue.
Fit notes
Boxy through the body and fitted through the sleeve, which is a specific combination: the volume is in the torso and the arm stays clean, so the jacket does not read as oversized overall. A knitted cotton has some give but very little recovery compared with wool, so it will relax slightly with wearing rather than spring back.
Styling
Navy blue in a textured cotton reads softer than navy in a worsted, so it sits happily with denim, white, cream, and stone in a way a formal navy jacket does not. Boxy over narrow, as always. Collar buttoned when it is cold enough to want it.
Care
Wash cool or dry clean, and dry flat rather than hung, because a knitted cotton holds water and will pull itself long on a hanger. Our general guidance on cotton covers the rest.
