A boxy cut and a vertical pleat are a deliberately matched pair. Boxy means the side seams run straight down rather than following the waist, so there is no shaping anywhere to interrupt the fall of the cloth, and the pleats consequently run the full length of the shirt without deflection. The result is a garment that reads as a set of clean vertical lines from the shoulder to the hem. The colour is the other half of it. Gray-Purple is not a grey with a purple cast so much as a colour that resolves differently depending on the light, cool and neutral under one and distinctly violet under another, and the pleating amplifies that by presenting two faces of every fold at slightly different angles.
Why we selected it
The boxy cut is what lets the pleating run clean, and the grey-purple is a considerably more interesting colour than a plain grey would have been.
Homme Plissé applies Issey Miyake‘s heat-set pleating to menswear shapes, and this shirt is the line at its most straightforward.
Materials and construction
100% polyester, made in Japan, in Gray-Purple. Signature vertical pleats, boxy button-up cut.
Fit notes
Boxy through the body, so it hangs straight rather than following the waist. Pleated cloth opens as it is worn, giving more room in motion than the flat garment suggests.
Styling
The straight vertical line is the whole silhouette, so it wants a trouser that does not fight it. Worn open over a plain top, the two front panels become vertical stripes.
Care
The pleats are heat-set into the polyester and are permanent, so it washes without losing them. Wash at 30°C or below in a laundry net on a short cycle, or press gently by hand, and never tumble dry, iron, steam, or dry clean. Store it rolled along the direction of the pleats.
