Volume in a garment is nearly always put at the front, where it can be seen on a rail and photographed on a body. This one is at the back. The panel behind the shoulders is drafted into a bulb, which means the jacket carries its shape where the wearer cannot see it and everyone else can, and it means the front is left close and quiet. The closure follows the same logic. Instead of a placket running down the center, a rope crosses the chest and fastens off to one side, so the only line on the front runs diagonally. The pockets are at the sides, which is part of the same argument: a pocket on the chest would have crossed the one line the jacket allows itself. Both decisions are made in the pattern and in the fastening rather than in any applied detail, which is why the jacket looks plainer on a hanger than it does on a person. It is cut short, to the waist, in pure wool with nothing blended behind it. The wool is what makes the bulb hold. A cloth with real drape in it would let the panel collapse into a gather, and a panel that has collapsed is not a shape, it is just fullness. Made in the Netherlands, in the color Universal Black.
