Rick Owens Adri Bag

There is no trick here, and that is the interesting part. After the sculptural bags and the architectural ones, the Adri is simply a well-made calf leather bag: a clean body, a strap that adjusts and comes off, a logo pressed into the hide rather than stuck onto it, and a D-ring. Nothing is being demonstrated.

Which puts all the weight on two things, the leather and the colour. Calf is a firm, close-grained hide that resists scuffing and holds its shape under load, and in a bag with no structural gymnastics it is the entire quality argument. Cardinal red is the other half. A red bag is a decision, and a red bag in a house whose customers wear a great deal of black is a very specific decision: it is the single object that will do all the work in an otherwise monochrome wardrobe.

The detachable strap matters more here than on a larger bag, because it converts a cross-body into something you can carry into a dinner. One object, two registers.

Why we selected it

We took the red rather than the black on purpose. Our customers already own black bags, and this house is one of the few that gets a saturated red right rather than letting it drift orange or pink. It is also the piece we most often see leave with someone who came in for something else.

One hundred percent calf leather. Made in Italy, in Cardinal Red. Adjustable and detachable strap, embossed logo, D-ring.

Sizing and how it carries

We do not hold dimensions for this bag, and we would rather say so than estimate them. Qualitatively, this is the everyday size rather than the large one: it carries a day’s essentials rather than a working day’s papers. Worn cross-body the strap keeps it close at the hip; carried in the hand with the strap removed it reads considerably more formal. We will measure it for you if you call.

How it is worn

Against black, which is what it is for. Against grey wool, where the red stops being a statement and starts being a colour. It is not a bag that needs anything else in the outfit to be red.

Care

Calf leather asks for very little: keep it out of prolonged direct sun, let it dry naturally and away from heat if it is caught in weather, and store it lightly stuffed so it does not learn a crease. A saturated dye will lift in colour slowly with sun exposure, which is worth knowing for a red. We do not prescribe a conditioning interval. Our care guidance covers the general principles.
