Rick Owens Cerberus Bag

Most bags with a strong silhouette get there by cheating. A layer of board or a heavy fusing is laid inside the panels and the leather is stretched over it, which produces a crisp outline and a bag that will crack along its own folds in five years. Lamb is the wrong skin for that approach entirely. It is one of the softest leathers used for bags, fine-grained and fluid, with a hand closer to cloth than to hide, and it will not hold a shape it has been told to hold.

So the shape has to come from somewhere else, and here it comes from the pattern. The panels are cut and seamed so that the volume exists as a consequence of the construction, which means the bag reads as an architectural object while still collapsing softly against the body when you carry it. That is a genuinely difficult thing to build, and it is the whole of why the bag looks the way it does.

The result is an object that behaves differently depending on how full it is, which most bags refuse to do. Empty it is nearly flat. Loaded it becomes the thing in the photographs. Both states are intentional.

Why we selected it

We look at a great many bags and buy very few, and the test is always the same: does it still make sense when it is empty and lying on a table. This one does. It belongs in the same conversation as the objects in the gallery, and that is not a comparison we make loosely. We also bought it because it is the antithesis of a logo bag. Nothing on it announces the house, and everyone who would recognise it already does.

The sculptural approach that runs through the clothing is at its most literal in the leathergoods, and the Cerberus is the piece where a bag is most plainly treated as an object first.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent lamb leather, made in Italy, in Black. Lamb is a fine, supple skin with a close grain and a soft hand; it marks more readily than calf and it ages into something better for it.

Sizing and how it carries

We do not hold dimensions for this piece, so the honest guidance is qualitative. This is a bag with real volume that carries close to the body rather than swinging away from it, and its profile changes considerably with what is inside it. If you are deciding between this and a structured bag, the question is whether you want an object that stays the same all day or one that responds to being used. We are glad to measure the piece in the store and tell you exactly.

How it is worn

Against black on black it reads as pure form, which is the way the house would show it. Against a bone or oatmeal knit and grey wool it does something more surprising, because the shape becomes legible in a way it is not when everything disappears into itself. It is not an occasion bag and we would not treat it as one.

Care

Fine lamb leather asks for restraint. Keep it stuffed and stored in its dust bag when it is not in use so it does not learn a fold, keep it out of prolonged direct sun, and let it dry naturally and away from heat if it gets caught in weather.
