There is a category of bag that exists to be looked at and a category that exists to be used, and the houses that are good at the first are usually indifferent to the second. This one is both. It is genuinely large, it takes a laptop and a folder and the rest of a working day, and it does not apologise for any of that by pretending to be a clutch with ambitions.
Calf is the right skin for the job and the reason it works. Where lamb is soft and fluid, calf is firmer, denser, and more resistant to scuffing, with a tighter grain that takes a knock and recovers. A bag this size in a softer leather would sag under a full load within a year. This one holds.
The strap is the part worth noticing. It adjusts, and it detaches entirely, so the same bag works carried in the hand, on the shoulder, or across the body, and the three readings are quite different. The hardware is silver-toned rather than the warmer finish most houses default to, which keeps the whole object cool and graphic instead of decorative. The logo is embossed into the leather rather than applied to it, which is the quiet way of doing it.
Why we selected it
We wanted one bag in the store that a customer could carry every day for ten years, and this is it. Most of what we buy in accessories is chosen for what it says; this was chosen for what it does, and then it turned out to say something as well. The detachable strap is doing more work than it looks like: it is the reason one bag covers three occasions, which is the only honest argument for owning one rather than three.
The leathergoods are where Owens’s proportions are easiest to live with, and the Balloon is the most practical thing the house makes.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent calf leather, made in Italy. Adjustable and detachable strap, embossed logo, silver-toned hardware.
Sizing and how it carries
We do not hold measurements for this bag, and we would rather say so than estimate one. Qualitatively: this is the large one. It carries a full working day comfortably and it is not a small evening bag pretending otherwise. Worn cross-body the strap keeps the volume against the hip rather than letting it swing. Call or come in and we will measure it for you.
How it is worn
Cross-body with a coat over it is the way we would wear it, and it is the configuration where the size stops registering as size and starts registering as proportion. Hand-carried with the strap removed it becomes considerably more formal. It takes black, it takes grey, and it takes brown leather elsewhere in the outfit without conflict.
Care
Calf is more forgiving than lamb but the same principles apply. Store it upright and lightly stuffed, keep it out of prolonged sun, and if it gets wet let it dry naturally away from heat rather than being helped along. We do not prescribe a conditioning interval; how often a bag needs it depends entirely on how hard it is used. Our care guidance covers the general principles.
