Rick Owens Hood

It works in two positions and neither is the compromise. Over the head it is a hood and covers the ears and the back of the neck; dropped to the shoulders and wound once it is a scarf, and the shape that made it a hood is what gives it the volume at the throat. Nothing fastens, adjusts, or converts. It is one piece of knitted cashmere whose pattern happens to work both ways round, which is a much harder thing to draft than a garment with a button on it.

Styling and care

Under a coat with an open collar, up or down. Over a fine knit rather than a bulky one. For care, cashmere is worn several times between cleanings, hand washed cool with a wool detergent at most, never wrung, and dried flat and reshaped rather than hung. Two useful objects in one is usually a compromise and this is one of the few times it is not. That, and cashmere against the neck is the argument for cashmere in the first place.

Ninety-seven percent cashmere and three percent wool, made in Italy. Knitted, with no fastening.

One size, and the fit is a function of how it is worn rather than of measurement. Worn up it sits close to the head without a drawstring; worn down it has enough volume to wind once at the neck. Cashmere relaxes with wear and recovers with rest rather than with washing.
