Rick Owens Maglia – Cropped Crater Knit

Three decisions, all of them about where the garment ends. It is cropped, so it finishes above the hip. The shoulders are dropped, so the sleeve begins below where the shoulder does. And the armholes are dropped with them, so the whole upper half of the sweater falls rather than sits. The neck has a slight cowl, which is a soft collapse of fabric rather than a standing collar, and it is the only thing on the sweater that is not a straight line.

In a lightweight new wool, that combination stays soft. New wool means the fibre has never been previously used, so the yarn is at full strength and a fine knit like this keeps its shape rather than growing.

Why we selected it

The cropped length and the dropped shoulders are the same proportion the house draws its outerwear on, here in a lightweight wool knit. That is the useful thing about it: someone can wear the house’s proportion, and find out whether they want it, without the commitment a coat asks for.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent new wool, made in Italy, in a lightweight knit. Colour: Dust. Cropped, with a slight cowl neck, dropped shoulders, and dropped armholes.

Fit notes

Cropped, so it ends above the hip and the trouser it is worn with decides the proportion; a higher rise suits it better than a low one. Dropped shoulders and armholes mean the fit is loose by design and the width is intended. Fine wool relaxes with wear and recovers when folded and rested.

Styling and care

With a high-waisted straight trouser, since the crop wants length below it. Under a jacket if the jacket is loose enough to take a dropped shoulder. Fold it, never hang it, air it between wearings, and hand wash in lukewarm water with a neutral wool detergent and dry flat when it needs it. Our care guidance covers wool in detail.
