A raglan sleeve is cut in one piece with the shoulder, joined by a seam that runs diagonally from the underarm to the neck rather than around the top of the arm. It was invented for movement and it has a second effect that matters more in knitwear: there is no seam sitting on the point of the shoulder, so nothing marks where your shoulder ends and the sleeve begins. The garment reads as one soft, continuous line from neck to wrist, which is why a raglan looks relaxed even when it fits.
In lightweight cashmere that softness compounds. The knit is fine enough to layer under a jacket without bulk, and the ribbing at the collar and cuffs is the only firm point on the sweater.
Why we selected it
The plain black cashmere crewneck is the most-worn thing in most of our customers’ wardrobes and most of them are cut with a set-in shoulder, which is fine and which is also what everyone else sells. The raglan is softer on the body and better under the tailoring we carry. That is the whole reason, and it is enough.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent cashmere, made in Italy, in black. Raglan sleeve, ribbed crewneck and cuffs, in a lightweight knit.
Fit notes
Raglan sleeves are forgiving through the shoulder, so the fit is governed by the body rather than by shoulder width and it will suit a wider range of frames than a set-in sweater. Lightweight cashmere layers under a jacket without adding bulk. It relaxes across a day of wearing and recovers when folded and rested.
Styling
Under any of the tailoring here, which is what a fine knit is for. On its own with a straight trouser. Black cashmere needs no help.
Care
Fold it, never hang it, because a hanger will stretch the shoulders and neckline of a fine knit within weeks. Hand wash cool with a gentle detergent, press the water out between towels, and dry flat away from sun and heat. Early pilling is normal and comes off with a cashmere comb. Our care guidance covers cashmere in detail.
