The number in the name is the heel height. Across the house’s own line, Cantilever 8 is eight centimetres and Cantilever 11 is eleven, so this is the six, which is the most wearable member of the family and the one that reads as a shoe rather than as an event.
A cantilever, in engineering, is a beam anchored at one end and unsupported at the other, and that is precisely what this heel does. Rather than dropping straight down beneath the heel of the foot in a column, it projects and curves so the load is carried at an angle, which produces the small optical shock that gives these their reputation: the foot appears to be floating slightly forward of its own support. It is a structural idea rendered in a shoe, and it is unusually literal for a designer whose architectural references are normally atmospheric.
The rest is stripped back deliberately. A minimal strap, a square toe, no ornament. When the heel is doing something this unusual, everything else has to get out of the way.
Why we selected it
We wanted the Cantilever in the store and we wanted the version a customer could stand in for an evening. The taller ones are more dramatic and we would rather sell the one that gets worn. The square toe is the other reason: it stops the sandal reading as a party shoe and lets it work in the daytime, which doubles the number of days a year it comes out of the box.
Owens designs footwear as structure before ornament, and the Cantilever is the clearest instance of that in the current line.
Materials and construction
One hundred percent leather. Made in Italy. Minimal strap upper, square toe, sculptural cantilever heel of six centimetres. From the Spring/Summer 2026 Temple collection.
Fit notes
A minimal strap sandal has very little holding the foot, so the fit across the strap is the whole fit and there is no adjustment elsewhere. A cantilevered heel distributes weight differently from a straight one and most wearers find the balance point takes a few minutes to learn; it is not unstable, it is just not where your foot expects it. A square toe generally accommodates a wider foot better than a pointed one. Worth trying on rather than ordering blind.
Styling
Under a wide trouser with the hem breaking just above the strap, which is the way the house shows it. With a midi dress it is the entire punctuation of the outfit. We would not fight it with a patterned sock.
Care
A sculptural heel wants storing upright and unstacked, so that nothing rests against the curve and nothing presses the strap flat. Beyond that, leather is wiped rather than washed: a barely damp cloth, dried naturally and away from heat, and no product on a fine strap unless it genuinely needs one. A minimal sandal has very little material in it, so what marks it usually marks it at the edge of the strap, which is worth catching early. Our care guidance covers leather in detail.
