Rick Owens SS26 Combo Slip Dress

Most slip dresses are one fabric and one idea. This one is three, and the reason is structural rather than decorative. The body is cupro, a regenerated cellulose fibre with a cool surface and a fluid weight, which is what a slip needs to fall properly. A band in viscose with elastane provides the one place in the garment with any stretch, which is how a dress with no fastening holds where it is meant to hold. And the lateral details are silk, which behaves differently again: lighter, with more spring and more light in it.

Three cloths in one garment is expensive to make and easy to get wrong, because each has a different weight, a different shrinkage, and a different way of moving. Get it right and the dress does something a single fabric cannot: it is fluid where it should be fluid and controlled where it needs control, and the seams between the cloths become the design.

That is a very Owens way to build a simple garment. The silhouette is minimal to the point of severity and the complication is entirely internal.

Why we selected it

We take a slip dress most seasons because it is the piece that works hardest in a wardrobe, and this one does more than a slip dress usually can. The layered construction is the reason. It also means the dress fits better than a single-cloth slip, since the elastic band is doing work that a pure cupro slip asks the wearer’s body to do.

Fit notes

A slip with an elasticated band fits over a wider range than one without, and the band is where it holds. The cupro body has no stretch, so the fit through the hip is the fit. Three cloths mean three rates of movement, and the dress will settle slightly in the first wearings.

Styling

On its own, or under a knit or a leather jacket, which is how a slip earns its place. With a flat shoe by day and something harder in the evening. A dress this plain takes an extraordinary shoe better than an extraordinary dress takes a plain one.

Care

Three cloths mean the most delicate one sets the rule, so treat the whole dress as silk: hand wash cool or dry clean, dry flat away from heat, press low. Do not wring, since wet viscose and cupro both lose strength. Our care guidance covers the general principles.
