Rick Owens SS26 Ribbed Long Sleeve Dress

A rib is a knit structure rather than a pattern: columns of stitch alternating face and reverse, which makes the fabric contract widthwise and gives it far more lateral stretch than a plain knit. That is why a ribbed dress holds the body and returns to shape, and why the vertical lines lengthen whatever they are laid over. On a long-sleeved dress with no other feature at all, the rib is doing every job there is: the fit, the recovery, and the only visual interest. It is doing them in a cloth that offers no help either, since neither viscose nor silk has any spring of its own, so what holds this dress to the body is the geometry of the knit and nothing else.

There is no closure, no seam detail, and no neckline event. It is a plain dark column, and it is meant to be worn rather than looked at.

Why we selected it

Some things in a wardrobe are infrastructure. This is one, and we would rather say so than manufacture a philosophy about a black ribbed dress. It goes under everything, it travels, and it is the piece that gets worn on the days nothing else appeals.

Fit notes

A rib fits close and stretches considerably more across the body than along it, so it will read narrower on the hanger than it wears. The recovery comes from the knit rather than from the fibre, which means it holds where it is stretched across and gives where it is pulled down: expect it to relax through the length across a day and settle back when it rests. Take your usual size; the rib does the accommodating.

Styling and care

Under a leather jacket or a long coat, with a boot. It is a base layer that happens to be a dress. For care, fold it rather than hanging it, since a rib stretches under its own weight and a viscose one will not spring back, hand wash cool, and dry it flat, reshaping while damp. Never hang it wet: viscose is markedly weaker wet than dry and the weight of the water is what lengthens a long knit permanently. Our care guidance covers viscose in detail.
