Rick Owens SS26 Tailored Geth

Geth is a denim name. It belongs to the wide, low, straight jean that is the backbone of the house's casual line, and seeing it attached to a pressed trouser with welt pockets is the joke and the point at once. Take the proportion of the jean, keep the width and the ease, and then build it with the grammar of tailoring: a proper waistband, a closure that wraps and buttons rather than zipping shut on itself, creases pressed front and back, and welt pockets set into the seat rather than patched onto it.

What results is a trouser that is unmistakably tailored and not remotely formal. The crease does the formality. The volume undoes it. This is a much harder balance than either extreme, and it is where Owens is at his most underrated, because the loud pieces get the attention and the trousers are what people actually buy twice.

The wrap closure is the detail to look at. A conventional trouser fastens on a straight line at the centre front. A wrap crosses the waistband over itself and buttons through, which removes the vertical break above the fly and lets the front of the trouser read as one plane. It is the same instinct as the off-centre zip on the leather jackets, applied to a waistband.

This is the trouser we recommend to the customer who wants to start with Owens and does not want to start with a statement. It goes to dinner, it goes to a gallery opening, and it goes to work in whatever form work now takes, and nothing about it demands the rest of the look agree with it. In a store that carries a great deal of tailoring, this is the pair that gets tried on and then bought, which is a specific thing we watch for.

Owens's tailoring is the least-discussed part of his work and often the most wearable, and the Tailored Geth is the clearest example of a casual pattern being rebuilt with tailoring's rules.

Mid rise and wide through the leg, cut long enough to break properly over a shoe rather than to sit above it. A pressed trouser of this width reads bigger on a hanger than it does on the body, which is worth knowing before judging it on the rail. The wrap closure gives a small amount of adjustment at the waist that a conventional fly does not.

With a fine knit tucked, or with a shirt left out, and a substantial shoe underneath so the volume has something to land on. Under a long coat this is the trouser the whole silhouette is built on. We would not put a delicate shoe with it.

Wool asks for brushing and airing and very little cleaning. Hang it full length from the waistband or the cuff rather than folded over a bar, which is what keeps a pressed crease where it was put, and let a crease somewhere it does not belong fall out overnight before assuming the trouser needs a press. When it does go out, use a cleaner who will return the creases to the front and back rather than wherever the machine puts them, which on a trouser drawn this wide is the difference between tailoring and a pair of trousers.
