Look at the origin line first, because it is the unusual thing here. Nearly everything this house makes comes out of Italy, and the great majority of it out of one town near Modena. This trouser was made in Japan. Japan is where the world’s most exacting cotton work is done, particularly in the heavier weights and in the finishing, and a house that owns its own Italian factory going elsewhere for a specific garment is a decision rather than an accident.

What arrives is a cargo cut with real width through the leg, thigh pockets that function rather than decorate, patch pockets at the back, and hems left extended so the trouser stacks over the shoe instead of stopping at it. Dark Dust is the house’s grey-brown, a colour that has been in the line long enough to function as a house neutral.

Extended hems are the detail worth understanding. Most trousers are cut to break once and end. Cut longer, the excess collects at the ankle in folds, which shortens the visual line of the leg and makes the volume above it read as deliberate. It is a proportion trick, and it only works if the cloth has enough body to stack rather than crumple. This one does.

Why we selected it

We bought this for the cloth and the making. A cargo trouser is a cargo trouser until you handle one that has been finished properly, and the difference is immediate. It is also the piece we point to when a customer assumes everything from this house is severe; a wide cotton cargo is about as approachable as Owens gets.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton. Made in Japan, in Dark Dust. Functional cargo pockets, back patch pockets, extended hems. From the Spring/Summer 2026 Temple collection.

Fit notes

Wide through the leg and cut long, with the hem intended to stack over the shoe. Cotton with no elastane will soften with wear and will not stretch, so buy the waist to fit. If you intend to have them shortened, the extended hem is the design and taking it up removes the effect.

Styling

With a heavy boot or a substantial sneaker, since the hem needs something to break over. With a plain tee or a knit above; the volume is the statement and it does not want a second one. This is the Owens trouser that works in a Santa Fe summer.

Care

Wash cool and hang to dry. A cotton of this weight will hold its shape better if it is not tumbled, and the hems in particular will keep their stack. Our care guidance covers the general principles.
