A track trouser is a garment defined entirely by what it is made of, which is why doing it in cupro changes the whole proposition. Cupro is a regenerated cellulose spun from cotton linter, cool to the touch, fluid, with a faint lustre and no spring at all. At this weight it is semi-transparent. Putting that cloth into a shape everyone reads as athletic produces a trouser that moves like a silk pyjama and is cut like something you would run in, and the two readings do not settle.

That refusal to settle is the design. It is not sportswear given a soft treatment, and it is not evening wear given a casual shape; it is genuinely both at once, and which one it looks like depends almost entirely on what is worn above it. The colour supports the ambiguity: dusty rose is a house shade with no brightness in it, muted enough to sit beside black and specific enough not to read as a neutral.

Why we selected it

Lightweight trousers that are neither pyjama nor sportswear are surprisingly hard to find, and this is the one that solved it for us. Cupro is also the right answer to a long warm season, being cool against the skin and washable in a way silk is not, which matters more here than it would in a colder place.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cupro, made in Italy, in dusty rose. Lightweight and semi-sheer.

Fit notes

Semi-sheer at this weight, which is worth knowing before ordering, particularly in a pale shade. Cupro has no stretch and very little recovery, so it hangs rather than following the body and will not spring back if it is pulled. The track shape means the fit is loose through the leg by design. Take your usual size.

Styling

With a close black top, which is the combination that makes the trouser read as deliberate rather than as loungewear. Under a long coat. With a flat shoe, since the cloth has no weight to fall over a heel.

Care

Cupro is markedly weaker wet than dry, so hand wash cool, never wring it, and dry it flat rather than on a hanger, where the weight of wet cloth will lengthen the leg permanently.
