Rick Owens Basic Rib Tank

Rib is a knit structure rather than a texture, and it is why this holds where a flat jersey tank would sag. Ribbing alternates columns of face and reverse stitches, which lets the fabric compress and expand across its width and then return, so a ribbed tank grips the body and recovers instead of stretching out at the ribcage. In viscose and silk, which have very little natural spring of their own, that structure is doing essentially all the work.

Cut close and elongated, so it runs past the waist. It is a base layer with a shape.

Why we selected it

It is the tank that goes under everything sheer we carry from this house, which is a lot, and the viscose and silk means it does not read as underwear when it shows. That is the practical reason and it is the real one.

Materials and construction

Eighty-eight percent viscose and twelve percent silk, made in Italy. Ribbed jersey, close fitting and elongated.

Fit notes

Close and long. The rib structure means it will accommodate more range than a flat jersey of the same size and will return to shape, so take your usual size rather than sizing up for comfort. Viscose and silk follows the body and relaxes across a day.

Styling and care

Under the Jumbo Tabard Top, the Collage T-Shirt, or either cropped outershirt, which is what it is for. With high-waisted trousers alone in summer. For care, hand wash cool, do not wring it, and dry it flat, since viscose is weaker wet than dry. Our care guidance covers the rest.
