Santoni Fringe Marta Bag

Fringe is the only thing you can put on a bag that keeps moving after the bag has stopped. It breaks the outline, it reads from across a street, and it is why the plain body underneath needs no other decoration. Suede is the right skin for it: a napped surface has no polished grain to catch the light in one plane, so the strands read as depth rather than as a row of cut edges. Brown keeps it in the register of saddlery. That a house whose entire discipline is Italian shoemaking has taken a western idea seriously rather than quoting it is the surprise, and the restraint shows in what has not been added. Three card slots and a zip pocket inside mean the bag does a wallet's job as well as its own, and a magnet snap closes it without being asked twice. Made in Italy.

Sizing and dimensions

Eight inches tall, ten inches long, and three and a half inches wide. That is the size at which a bag stops being a pouch and starts holding a day: cards and folded notes in the slots, a phone and keys in the body, and the small loose things in the zip pocket rather than at the bottom of everything.

We are in Santa Fe, where fringe is everywhere and a great deal of it is costume. We wanted the version made by a house with a hundred other things to be good at, and this is it.

Against plain clothes. A bag with fringe on it is already the pattern in an outfit, so nothing else has to be, and the pieces it works hardest against are the quietest ones you own. Brown suede sits warm against indigo and against grey in a way black would not.

Suede wants a brush, not a cream. The nap lifts with a suede brush and lies down under anything applied wet, so keep this away from standing water and away from the creams made for smooth leather.
