Santoni Tumbled Leather Document Holder

The interesting decision on this piece is the removable pouch. A zip pouch built into a leather case is a coin compartment and nothing else. A zip pouch that lifts out is a second object: it goes into a jacket on its own, it takes the small loose things that would otherwise be at the bottom of a bag, and it comes back. That it is orange against a black case is the other decision, and it is the one you notice first, because a black leather case that opens onto a color is doing something a black leather case that opens onto more black is not. The rest is plain and it is meant to be. Two internal pockets, a snap button rather than a zip on the outside, one hundred percent tumbled leather, and made in Italy.

Why we selected it

Most people replace a wallet every few years because the leather has gone soft in the wrong places rather than because they wanted a new one. We wanted the version where the hide was the first decision and not the last. The orange pouch is the part we did not expect to like.

Santoni is a shoemaker before it is anything else, and the discipline that transfers to a flat leather case is the one about hides rather than the one about lasts.

Styling

It is black and it is quiet, so it goes wherever it is put. The orange is the argument for carrying it open on a table rather than closed in a pocket.

Care

Santoni’s own instruction, and the one worth following, is to use creams made for its leathers and its hand-applied colors rather than a general product. Beyond that: keep it out of a back pocket if you want the edges to stay square, and let a tumbled hide take its marks, because the grain absorbs them in a way a smooth finish does not.
