Santoni Small Chapelier with Zipper Closure

A bag that does two jobs usually looks like it. The cross-body strap long enough to work is too long to hold comfortably, and the handbag that has been given a strap wears it like an apology. Small ones are the exception, because at this size the geometry stops fighting: a body short enough to sit at the hip is also short enough to sit in a hand, and the same object reads as deliberate in both positions rather than as one position with a concession bolted to it. What it is made of does the rest. Tumbled leather takes its pebble from a drum rather than from an embossing plate, so the grain is irregular in the way a hide is irregular rather than even in the way a machine is even, and on a body this plain, with a top zip and a single interior pocket, that irregularity is the only pattern on the object.

Why we selected it

We wanted a small bag with nothing on the outside of it, and there are fewer of those than there should be. This one closes with a zip and otherwise just shows you a hide.

Santoni colors and finishes its leather by hand, and a plain body with a top zip is the shape that leaves that work nowhere to hide.

Materials and construction

Tumbled leather. Top zip closure, one interior pocket, and a body plain enough to be worn across the body or carried in the hand. We do not hold a percentage figure, a country of origin, or a color for this piece.

Sizing and dimensions

We do not hold measurements. It is a small bag built to be worn across the body, which puts a rough floor and a rough ceiling on it, but neither of those is a number and we are not going to offer one as though it were. Call the store and someone will measure it against whatever you need it to hold.

Styling

It is a plain object, which means it is the one that goes with the difficult clothes. Cross-body with the strap short enough that the bag sits at the waist rather than the hip, if you want it to read as part of an outfit rather than as luggage.

Care

Santoni’s own instruction is to use creams made for its leathers and its hand-applied colors and not to substitute, and that is the instruction that matters most on a piece where the color is the finish. Keep it out of standing water, condition it rarely rather than often, and anything past surface cleaning wants a leather specialist. Our care guidance covers the rest.
