Tibi Sculpted Cotton Long Sleeve Top

Almost every long-sleeved top is a knit, which means it works by stretching. This one is a woven cotton worked stiff, and it works by not stretching, which changes the entire proposition. A rigid cotton holds whatever shape it is cut into: the sleeve stands on its own, the hem curves where it was drafted to curve, and the garment reads as a small piece of construction rather than as clothing draped over a frame. Once the cloth is doing that, the details become structural rather than decorative. The cutouts at the elbow exist because a rigid sleeve cannot bend without them, so an opening at the joint is the solution to a real problem and only incidentally an interesting one to look at. The zips at the cuff are there for the same reason: a stiff sleeve has to open to get a hand through it. And the closure is moved to the back, concealed, so the front of the garment has no interruption at all. Every choice on this top follows from the first one.

Why we selected it

We like clothes where the ornament turns out to be the engineering. Nothing on this top was added for looks, and it is the piece that explains what the house means by sculpted better than any of the others do.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton, worked rigid. Made in China. White. Crew neckline, curved back hem, cutouts at the elbow, zippered cuffs, and a concealed snap closure at the back.

Fit notes

Cut short in the body and structured rather than close, so it stands slightly away from the frame instead of following it. A rigid cotton has no give whatsoever, so the size is decided at the shoulder and the upper arm and there is no negotiating afterwards. It does not layer under a close jacket without fighting; it layers over things, or alone.

Styling

Care

Rigid cottons lose their hand to heat and to fabric softener, which is the thing that actually softens them permanently. Wash cool without softener and hang to dry, or dry clean if you want the crispness kept exactly. Our care guidance covers cotton.
