Tibi Tropical Wool Maxi Skirt

A trouser skirt is not a hybrid of two garments so much as a skirt that has borrowed the part of a trouser that actually matters. What a trouser gets right is the waist: it sits somewhere definite, it holds, and it does not need adjusting through a day. What a skirt gets right is the line, uninterrupted from waist to hem. Put the first under the second at full length and you have a garment that reads as formal and behaves as practical, which is a rarer combination in a long skirt than it should be. The tropical wool is what makes it work at this length. A long skirt in a soft cloth wraps around the legs and drags; this blend has enough body to fall straight and enough recovery, from the small percentage of elastane, not to bag at the seat after an hour of sitting. It is lightweight and breathable enough to wear in heat, which is the reason the cloth exists.

Why we selected it

It shares a cloth with the Liam blazer, which means the two together make a suit that nobody had to buy as one. That flexibility is the whole reason we carry this cloth in three different garments.

Materials and construction

Fifty-three percent polyester, forty-three percent wool, and four percent elastane, in the house’s tropical wool, which is a recycled blend. Made in China. Black. Maxi length.

Fit notes

Sits at the waist where a trouser waistband sits rather than at the natural waist, and falls straight to the ankle. The elastane gives movement without ease, so it holds its line rather than relaxing through a day. It takes a shoe with some presence, since the length will otherwise swallow it.

Styling

With the Tropical Wool Liam Blazer, which makes it a suit. With the Sculpted Cotton Long Sleeve Top, structure over length. With the Washable Cashmere Oversize Easy T for the version that is not trying at all.

Care

Wool blended with polyester and elastane will not take heat, which destroys the elastane’s recovery and glazes the polyester. Dry clean and press cool if at all. Our care guidance covers what to do when a garment is more than one material.
