The overall is a workwear shape, which means it arrives with a set of associations, most of them about being useful. What happens when the shape is cut in a tailored suiting rather than a canvas or a denim is that the associations survive and the roughness does not. The straps are adjustable and detachable in effect, so the garment holds two states rather than one: worn up it is a pinafore dress with a bib and a clean vertical line, and worn down it becomes a long skirt with a trouser’s waistband logic. Both are proper garments. Neither is the compromise position. The tropical wool blend is what allows it, because it has enough body to hold the bib flat and enough recovery to keep the skirt from bagging at the seat across a day, which is exactly where a soft cloth would fail this shape.

Why we selected it

We are interested in garments that are two things without being obviously either, and this is one. It also shares a cloth with the Liam blazer, which means anyone who owns both has a suit they did not have to buy as one.

Materials and construction

Fifty-three percent polyester, forty-three percent wool, and four percent elastane, in the house’s tropical wool, which is a recycled blend. Made in China. Black. Button closure at the front, adjustable straps, and two back pockets.

Fit notes

Cut long and tailored rather than loose, with the straps setting the drop when worn up. The elastane gives it movement without ease, so it holds its line through a day rather than relaxing. Worn as a skirt, it sits where a trouser waistband sits rather than at the natural waist.

Styling

Over the Slip Cami with the straps up, which is the summer version. Over the Sheer Wool Gauze Oversized Shirt with the straps up in cooler weather. Straps down under the Tropical Wool Liam Blazer, which makes it a suit.

Care

Wool blended with polyester and elastane cannot take heat, and this garment has hardware and a button placket that a hot press will mark. Dry clean, cool press only. Our care guidance covers what to do when a garment is more than one material.

Related pieces

The same cloth also makes the Tropical Wool Liam Blazer and the Tropical Wool Maxi Skirt. The house’s other convertible bottom is the Grain De Poudre pleated skirt, and for a plain layer above it, the Slip Cami. Layering With Tibi is the Library post that puts these together, and everything we currently hold from Tibi is listed together.
