Yeung Chin Straight Pants With Raw Edge Detail

A raw edge is a small argument about when a garment is finished. Almost every trouser ever made ends in a turned and stitched hem, which does two jobs: it stops the cloth unravelling, and it tells you the maker is done. Leaving the edge raw gives up the first job and refuses the second, and it only works if the rest of the trouser is disciplined enough to make it read as intent. This one is. The leg is straight, the color is a plain blue, and there is nothing else on it. What you notice, because it is the only thing to notice, is the edge. Cotton is the right fiber for the decision as well, because a cotton raw edge frays into something soft rather than into something ragged, and it does most of that in the first few washes and then more or less stops.

Why we selected it

We wanted one trouser in the store where a single unfinished detail carried the whole garment, and this is a cleaner version of that than most attempts at it. The blue is what keeps it from reading as a statement.

Yeung Chin works in Hong Kong and makes there, and this is the house’s discipline applied to a garment with no complications in it.

Materials and construction

One hundred percent cotton. Straight leg with a raw edge detail. Made in Hong Kong. Color: Blue.

Fit notes

Straight through the leg, so it falls from the hip without taper. Cotton with no elastane in it has very little recovery, which means it will soften and give across a day at the knee and the seat and come back with a wash. The raw edge moves for the first few washes and then holds.

Styling

With the Oversize Shirt untucked, since the shirt’s ties are the only other thing on either garment. With the Embroider T-Shirt for the plainest version. Under the Crop Vest Jacket.

Care

Wash cool and gentle and air dry, and the raw edge settles where it is meant to. A hot dryer is what takes a raw edge from a detail to a problem, and there is nothing else on this trouser that needs thinking about. Our care guidance covers the rest.
