4S Designs Dolman Cardigan/Coat

The name gives you both answers and refuses to choose, which is accurate, and it names the sleeve as well. It is cut slightly cropped and boxy, with patch pockets, which is cardigan geometry: short in the body, square through the shoulder, no waist. The sleeve is a dolman, cut in one piece with the body rather than set into an armhole, so the arm and the body move as one thing. The cloth is not a knit, though. It is a woven check in polyester, and a woven cloth does not drape or cling, so it stands away from the body the way outerwear does and it holds its own shape on a hook. The result is a layer that goes over a jacket as easily as it goes over a shirt, which is the useful and slightly unusual thing about it. Patch pockets are the right call on a boxy crop, because an inset pocket needs length below it to sit properly and this garment does not have any. Knicks Royal and Orange, and on a check a royal blue and an orange break up small enough that the cloth reads as a texture at distance and as a statement up close.

We wanted one layer that could go over a jacket without becoming a coat, and almost nothing does that. A cropped woven check with a dolman sleeve, and no fastening geometry to negotiate, is the version that works.

Sized 50 and 52 on the Italian scale. Cropped and boxy means it is cut short in the body and square through the shoulder, so it will sit above the hip and will not close across the chest the way a fitted cardigan does. A dolman sleeve has no shoulder seam to place, so the shoulder is a far less exacting fit than it would be on a set-in sleeve and there is more room under the arm. It is built to go over things, so size it for what is going under it.

Over the Knit BD Shirt Animal or the Long Sleeve Woven Polo. With the H. Sartorial Pant or the Triple Pleat Pant, both black, when the check should be the only pattern in play. Open, which is how a boxy crop reads best.

Polyester is the cloth and it will not take a hot iron, so keep heat off it. The lining is viscose, which loses strength when wet and shrinks in a way that does not come back, so have this cleaned rather than washed. Store it folded rather than hung: a cropped, unstructured layer with no shoulder seam has nothing to sit on a hanger properly. Our care guidance covers the rest.
