4S Designs Morning Robe Coat

Forty-eight percent wool, forty-five percent acrylic, and seven percent nylon is a blend that is easy to be snobbish about and worth understanding instead. Wool at nearly half is what gives the cloth its hand, its warmth, and its ability to hold a shape. Acrylic at nearly half changes the weight of that shape, and it also changes the color: acrylic takes dye brilliantly and holds it, so a tweed with this much acrylic in it does not go dusty the way an all-wool one can. Nylon at seven percent is structural, giving the yarns enough tensile strength to survive a loose tweed weave. What you get is a coat that is warm, light for its bulk, and stable. The cut is slightly oversized with patch pockets and a full lining, which is the correct set of decisions for a cloth like this: an oversized coat needs a lining to move over what is under it, and patch pockets sit better than inset ones on a soft tweed because they do not require the cloth to be cut into. Why we selected it

An oversized tweed coat that is actually light enough to wear all day is much harder to find than it sounds, because the cloths that give you the volume usually give you the weight as well. This one does not, and the lining means it goes over a jacket.

The house cuts outerwear generously and lets the cloth carry the garment, and this is the fullest example of that in the collection.

Materials and construction

Forty-eight percent wool, forty-five percent acrylic, and seven percent nylon, woven as a tweed. Made in Italy. Slightly oversized, fully lined, with patch pockets. Color: Grey.

Fit notes

Sized 46, 48, and 50 on the Italian scale. Slightly oversized means it is cut to go over a jacket rather than over a shirt, so it should be sized for what is underneath it. The full lining is what makes that work, since an unlined tweed drags on whatever it is put over.

Styling

Over the LS Shirt Blazer, which is the tailored answer in the same family of cloth, or over the Dolaman Cardigan/Coat if a second layer is genuinely needed. With the H. Sartorial Pant or the 5 Pocket Denim Black underneath.

Care

This is a dry-clean coat and there is no version of washing it that ends well: wool felts irreversibly with heat and agitation, and that is the failure that will destroy it first. The acrylic matters too and matters differently, so keep any iron cool and use a cloth, because acrylic glazes under direct heat. Store it on a broad hanger and give it room.
