Rick Owens Cargo Long

Pearl is the reason to look at this one. A pale trouser is a harder proposition than a dark one, and most people avoid them for reasons that are mostly about laundry. What a pale cargo does that a black one cannot is make the volume visible: on a dark trouser the folds and the pockets disappear into shadow, and on a pale one every fold registers. A cut like this, which is built on ease and volume, only shows its work in a light colour.

The construction is deliberately plain. An elastic drawstring waist rather than a fly, cargo pockets at the thigh, a relaxed leg, and cotton with three percent elastane for a little give. Nothing is being demonstrated. This is the trouser in the line that asks the least of the person wearing it, and it is honest about that.

Which is why it is worth saying plainly what it is: an extremely comfortable, well-cut cotton cargo. Not every good garment carries an idea.

Why we selected it

We carry this because our customers wear it. It is the piece that goes out of the store with someone who came in for a jacket, and it is the one we see again on the same person a month later. A store that only stocks the extraordinary is not much use to anyone getting dressed on a Tuesday.

Materials and construction

Ninety-seven percent cotton and three percent elastane. Made in Italy, in Pearl. Elastic drawstring waist, cargo pockets, relaxed fit.

Fit notes

A drawstring waist fits over a range rather than to a measurement. The leg is relaxed and the fit is easy throughout, so it is not a trouser to size up in. A cotton with a small amount of elastane relaxes across a day and recovers with washing.

Styling

With a sneaker or a sandal in summer, with a boot when it turns. Pearl against black is the obvious and correct pairing. It takes a plain tee and needs nothing else.

Care

Wash cool and hang to dry. A pale cotton wants washing more often than a dark one, and heat is what degrades the elastane, so keep it out of a hot dryer. Our care guidance covers the general principles.
